(13,018 posts)The level of anti-Christian vitriol above is alarming. Not all Christians are right wingers. Some Christians - like me - come to our liberal political leanings because of Jesus' teachings. I do not understand how a Christian can read the Sermon on the Mount and be a right winger.
There is no clear agreement among Christians for the meaning of words like "evangelical." Under the broader definition, Christians like Jimmy Carter (and I) are evangelicals. When the posts lump all Christians - or even all evangelicals - in the same disparaging category, they unfairly, paint with way-on too broad a brush. DUers would not so blithely disparage all Moslems, or all Jews,or all Buddhists or all atheists.
There is no question that there are some despicable people who claim to be Christian - just like there are bad people who are Moslems, Jews, Buddhists or atheists. The problem with the Church is that it is chock full of people and people will consistently behave like people.
I am no snowflake. My feelings are not hurt by anti-Christian posts. My alarm comes from what the mindset shown by such posts can do to the party.
The Democratic Party cannot hope to ever be successful on a nation-wide basis if Christians are not welcome in the Party. The Democratic Party needs to reach out to Christians, not denigrate them.
