Musings on being married to a Republican for 43 years [View all]

Party is fine, until it gets personal and hits "home", meaning you and your own family. This is how you can appeal and win them over.

I don't consider my husband to be their base. He has always been more in line with fiscal, rather than social issues. He had employer health insurance, WITH Medicare, for 3 years before he retired. Many Pre-Existing conditions long before he was 65. He was SHOCKED that all his hospital bills (four surgeries) were paid for in full with both. Appeal to this.

Our entire life we never made more than over $110,000 and got tax breaks for that. He saw that. Appeal to that. Our Retirement Income is less than half than that. Work on that.

Trump? That was personal for him. I was stalked by The Donald as young (married) woman and told him about that. Party alone was not enough for him to vote for Trump.

Religion? While he may have drank the Kool Aid about Muslims (working on him), he does not believe that the USA is a Christian Nation. He could care less about Non-Christian Religions and has even commented that the Christian Right has hijacked his Party.

Unemployment? Bringing back Factory Jobs? He has worked in IT for over 40 years and been the victim of Offshoring for years. He admits that Trump isn't acknowledging this, and WON'T be able to solve it.

Social Issues? Forget Birth Control, even raised as a Catholic. We decided on ONLY two children 44 years ago. I took BC and HE got a vasectomy after our second child. Gays? Our oldest daughter is a Lesbian married to a woman. He danced with not only his DIL, but our Daughter in her TUX. "Whatever makes they happy". Your own child. Ask Dick Cheney about that.

My point in all this? Except for the most extreme Far Right, you CAN reach them when you make it PERSONAL to them. You don't think many Republicans are seeing this right now with Health Care? Party will mean nothing for the Majority when it hits home. Make it known.
