Fruit of the Poisonous Tree is a legal metaphor for the proposition that evidence that is in and of itself legally obtained is nonetheless inadmissible when it arose from other evidence that was illegally obtained. So if the police kick in a person's door without a warrant and find a note that says drugs are in that person's office. They then use the note to get a warrant for the office and find drugs. The person would argue that the search of the office was invalid and the evidence obtained should be inadmissible, since it was "fruit of the poisonous tree, " that is, it originated from the prior illegal search.
