You'll find incidents of secrecy like this in every war and across every country, probably through almost all of history. Every country in WWII had their own version of the Office of Censorship, preventing the populace at large from receiving bad news from the front and damaging morale. As a side effect, this was also used to limit what information enemy forces received that would give away the details of efficiency or damage of any perpetrated attack.
This is nothing new or special, nor will it be likely to change within your lifetime or my own.
