(34,857 posts)People are forced to buy cheap, fatty foods that aren't healthy. This type of mindset is proof of this. Instead of buying something healthy, we'll scold her and say she needs to spend cheaply and wisely. Well, guess what's cheap? Cheap food. Fast food. McDonald's is cheap. TV dinners are cheap. Frozen pizza is cheap. It's also not healthy in the least. Healthy food is more expensive. Healthy snacks are more expensive. Grapes are probably more expensive than a $2.00 bag of Reese's Pieces.
What is priority? Healthy eating or saving as much as possible on cheap, fatty food?
The poor are overweight because of this very narrative. I know it doesn't sound like it's connectable, but she's got a daughter and if she only buys what she can afford, if she only spends money, or food stamps, on the cheapest thing possible, what she feeds her and her daughter will not be healthy in the least. It won't have any nutrient benefits and will lead to obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle.
So, who cares if she bought grapes instead of potato chips? Who cares if she bought water instead of cola? That should be commendable, even if it's a tad more expensive than unhealthy food.
