He's always been about the people. He fought a hard battle to save the municipal electric plant from an army of bankers and industrialists who wanted it shuttered.
The last time he disappeared from the public eye, after his mayorship ended, he was a college professor as I recall. Later he ran for Congress and served in the 10th district for years until it was gerrymandered out of existence. While in Congress he was a staunch defender of liberal values.
I don't recall another time in his past where he went over to the dark side like this. He's had odd moments relating his experiences with UFOs and for all I know other weird stuff but I don't think he's ever NOT been a champion of the people.
All I can imagine is he's in desperate need of money to sell his soul like this.
