(6,785 posts)"At least fundies don't fuck their sons and daughters." Again, you know different fundies from me. Everyone likes to joke about priests molesting kids, but it happens as often, probably more often, in rural fundamentalist churches. Think Warren Jeffs without the polygamy and with the cops on his side.
The degree isn't nearly as big as you think it is. It's a huge degree for you because you live in an area where they aren't allowed to get away with it. I don't argue the difference is degree, I argue the difference is opportunity. If the right wing zealots could get away with what the Taliban does, I have zero doubt they'd gleefully do it. It's not even a point that can really be argued against, because they've already done it. This isn't ancient history, most of DU was alive for the Textbook wars*. That didn't end until the government stepped in and stopped it. (It's also argued this event is one of the major starting points of the religious right in America)
Lest anyone think I mean Christians in general, I also know a lot of really good people that are Christians. They're also not insular nutty right wingers. It's the insular nutty right winginess that makes them vile people, not the Christian. It's the same thing that makes the Taliban vile.

And that link is actually extremely kind to the anti-textbook side. It neglects to mention Horan (The leader of the anti-textbook side) and some of his buddies were indicted for multiple bombings and a plot to wire bombs to the cars of parents who were driving their kids to school. That was the government stepping in and stopping it.
