(6,130 posts)He is defining what normal is so his base will accept the things he does. Like nepotism, breaking laws (emoluments) and open defiance of long standing rules/laws regarding relationships with foreign representatives. He boldly does these things and relies on his relative newness to politics as an excuse. Then he goes to the "everybody does it" line without a shred of evidence that it is true. Will his base bother to check? Nope. He has spoken and they eat it up. Their hero has the guts to break the rules and they like it.
Now the rest of us are not so enthused at his antics. We know what he is up to but so far have not figured out a way to bring the base up to speed on the tactics tRump is using on them. He is playing them with age old psychological games. He lies without shame. He gaslights anyone who hears him. He tells us down is up and the sky is lime green. No back talk allowed. Just nod in agreement and let him line his pockets. It will take the base a while longer to catch on to his games and some will never "get it".
But the tide IS turning and no matter how much he commands us to follow him, buh-leave him, he will lose enough followers to matter. His arenas will not be filled until they have an overflow crowd outside. Sales of MAGA hats will dwindle. The dedicated few will carry their signs and cheer but to a smaller and smaller audience.
I think tRump will never accept that his flaming star is nearing burn out. Those of us who have been living through this nightmare welcome the day when he is a smoldering ash on the rock pile of history. I just hope the damage he has done in his short term can be repaired or undone so we can put this trauma behind us. Gone but not forgotten.
