telling us about how rural people take care of each other and are generally just more virtuous than the rest of us? Where's all that neighborliness?

Also, not for nothing but I had a little familiarity with Grundy, VA a few years back. Recently Appalachian Law School and a dental school opened there. Those brought in a little money. Three or four new stores opened up on the main street, with hopes of a few more. A few folks got new jobs. The economic wheels were starting to grind up when ... Walmart came to town. The stores closed, the tax base (because of course Walmart got a deal for coming into town) dropped and you know the rest of the story. Now there are the law school, the dental school and twenty part time jobs that don't pay benefits and don't contribute much to the local economy. And, of course, a Waffle House.
