Police witnesses lie in just about every case. I know most people will say that is an exaggeration but it's not. Understand that not every lie is about something major, in many instances it's about something stupid and the lying is more about laziness than anything else. If you don't remember, you lie. If something puts you in a bad light, you lie. There are no consequences for lying, so it's just the easiest thing to do.
