When they realized they were stuck with him, they would use him as their deflection to protect their brand. They always intended to do as much damage as possible in search of some mythical past greatness, but now they can do whatever they want and blame Trump. If that stops working, they'll impeach and go back to blaming PELOSI or THE BLACK GUY (cue scary harpsichord music).
