My paternal grandparents both came here by way of Ellis Island, I actually saw images of their names on the ships' manifests. My mother was a refugee in Nazi Germany and used to tell us how she felt when she saw Lady Liberty for the first time from the deck of her passenger ship.

It's not meaningless, it's the exact opposite.
