In reply to the discussion: This may be unpopular, but I'm ok with running anti-choice Dems if it will win elections. [View all]The Velveteen Ocelot
(128,633 posts)Not ever. It's not just about abortion; it's about the basic principle that women are entitled to agency over their own bodies; that we are fully human and not, in respect of our personal lives and choices, to be controlled by men or by the state in ways that don't apply to men. To say it's OK for someone purporting to be a Democrat to run a campaign that includes an anti-choice position is to say that it's OK for Democrats to negate the civil rights of an entire group of people. Obviously we wouldn't ever support a Democrat who would advocate for "separate-but-equal" facilities for POC, so why can't we draw a similar line in the sand for civil rights for women?
If an individual personally believes for moral or religious reasons that abortion is wrong, that's their business. But if they want to impose that belief, using the power of the state, on women who do not share it and who are entitled to control their own bodies and lives, that is not acceptable.
