They all know full well that they've created - over the last several decades - a monster, and that monster commands the support of a plurality of Republicans (if not a majority).
That's why gerrymandering, voter suppression, propaganda and reliance upon kowtowing Dems has been and will continue to be so vitally important. The base of their party is batshit crazy, and that base worships Trump. Even when he openly insults them by saying he could murder someone and not lose a supporter.
