(11,746 posts)One of the rules was that you could have just one category. I spent a great deal of time benchmarking things that made people successful in the group. It turned out that people who focused on one thing did well, and people who could not focus on one thing did poorly. Actually, having a competitor in the group marketing a slightly different product or service made both people more successful.
My research on marketing confirmed that. Sure you can market more than one thing. But you can't do that successfully.
And no amount of persuasion on my part could convince people who didn't understand this fact that they could do whatever product or service they wanted to do, but marketing that single product or service was their key to success.
Yes, "part of the problem not the solution" is a cliche. But unlike the "walk and chew gum" cliche, I think the one I used isn't tired. It's true.
