(841 posts)First, let's not forget that the far right has existed in this country for a very long time. Trump did not create the white nationalist movement. Trump threw fuel on the fire, though, so he does deserve blame for that.
Second, if Clinton won the election things might actually be worse. Trump would have claimed that the election was rigged and his most fervent supporters would have believed him. You probably would have had at least one mass shooting over Trump losing the election.
This country has some major problems that are even bigger than Trump and those problems are fueling these extremist movements. Blaming Sanders and his supporters for this doesn't make sense especially since most Bernie supporters voted for Clinton in the general election.
EDIT: I would add that historically speaking electing Democrats to the presidency doesn't necessarily lead to a reduction in far-right activity. There was a big increase in far-right recruitment under Obama and I think you could make a solid argument that the far right was even stronger and more dangerous during Bill Clinton's presidency. The militia movement was at its height and you had incidents like the Oklahoma City bombing and Waco. I am not trying to downplay what happened in Virginia but I think we need to keep history in mind with regard to this issue.
