2. Nobody's going to secede.

In 1860 there were specific, contiguous states who had a single, unified interest in preserving slavery and that collective reason for trying to secede. Now the schism is mostly between rural and urban areas, and there's no way to divide the country geographically into cohesive countries with similar interests. The county I live in is very liberal; drive 60 miles north and you're in freeperville. But the reasons why a particular area is liberal or conservative are all over the place.
