But that doesn't excuse the fact he took up arms to do the party's business and had a close relationship with Hitler.

And it's also not settled business among historians if Rommel ever even knew about the bomb plot which if true would pretty much destroy the idea that he was some sort of dogooder who finally saw the light.

Lee may be worse though. He was a traitor. He took up arms against the US. He was also a slave owner who was known to be highly abusive to his "property". There was an excellent piece in The Atlantic posted here recently that cut the Lee mythology down to size.
