At the time of the Civil War most people in this country considered themselves first and foremost to have their allegiance to their state, not to a national entity. It was only as a result of the Civil War that people for the first time began to consider themselves citizens of the United States first and of a a state secondarily. In addition you're getting all exercised over nothing. I don't know how your ancestor felt and I would suggest that neither do you. Do you know if he enlisted or was drafted, and if he enlisted for what reasons he enlisted? But if it gives you something to hold on to to think he 'died to keep this country together', go for it. But using the Fox-style slur "..which to many is a symbol of treason" isn't worthy of being posted on DU.
