Joe Paterno isn’t responsible for Jerry Sandusky’s continued criminal acts, according to legendary baseball statistician Bill James. The press is.

James, who is a Red Sox senior advisor for baseball operations, believes that Paterno, the former Penn State football coach, should be absolved of all blame for covering up former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of boys for years.

A report issued by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh this week said Paterno and school administrators “concealed critical facts” about Sandusky’s transgressions. But James blames the press, including a Sports Illustrated article, for putting Sandusky and his charitable organization for kids, Second Mile, on a pedestal.
