(15,805 posts)News reporting takes the low hanging fruit because it's an easy angle that is going to boost their viewership. Just hinting of some sort of wrongdoing can be enough to change public opinion in a negative way when it comes to women.
The study concludes that Hillary message of "competence, experience, and policy positions were drowned out by coverage of alleged improprieties." Throughout the campaign the media was focused on relentlessly repeating rumors and hearsay about Hillary, and parroting what was said on rightwing news, and echoing the allegations coming from Republicans. They did not cover her policies, and I remember how obvious that gap was during the primaries.
Trump went on virtually unscathed by his many real and significant scandals and the news media soon tired of those incidents because Trump was live and yelling the most outrageous things that reporters had ever heard from a political candidate, and that was what they gave us as 'news'.
