(53,061 posts)When I am thinking what I am thinking I can hear myself complimenting myself on the brilliance of my thought process and the carefully laid out steps I have taken to arrive at it.
Fifteen minutes later I carefully re-examine my position and find that a number of the premises I relied on were carelessly formulated and are overly narrow, embarrassingly ambiguous or just the wrong flavour of ice cream.
This will bring me to completely reverse my original position and I find myself exactly at the position of your brilliantly worded and thoughtful response which is obvious and should be clear to everyone with out question.
It is at that point that I remember the wise admonition of Rene Descarte who was supposed to have settled this whole thing with Cogito ergo sum. (I think; therefore I am.) but then went on to doubt everything and may in fact be a butterfly thinking he is a man after all
If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.
It then follows that I review my self doubt and find it to be a ridiculous and self indulging exercise of fallacy, namely argument of fallacy also known as 'fallacy fallacy'. Obviously I have entered into a Mobius Strip of ironclad knowledge morphing into existential quandary and despair morphing into delusions of grandeur and the obvious result of starting over with the firm ironclad knowledge morphing into, well you see the problem.
At some point I stop the merry go round and realize that if I follow the current position of the Democratic Party, especially those positions recently laid out by President Obama, that I am actually on very solid ground and should just hold on that position while I have a Jello pudding.
That is why I have to strongly disagree with your reply and conclude that like you I don't agree with myself 100% of the time, disagree with myself 5% of the time and wonder what the hell I was thinking.
