15. Ain't the first time. A story about 1996 murder..Susan Smith killed her kids, blamed black man

Susan..made a mistake in talking to the police...she said she got stopped at a red light, and a black man jumped into her car.(no one was around to see this) ..and then he, the black man kidnapped her and killed her children.....................................................................................................................
.....But there was a problem, the police knew right away she was lying..at.that particular corner, where she claimed it happened, could not have had a red light in that direction. The way she was traveling, (or something very similar to this) on that street, in that direction.. when no one was around.....always had the lights green...she couldn't have been stopped by a red light....and no black man could have jumped in..

.So even though the police knew she was lying about the black man from the beginning, they put out a bulletin, and waited..and waited. It was all over the news..But in reality, the police were waiting to get her into a situation and make her confess to the crime. After they found the dead children, in a lake,..they went after Susan Smith...and at the right time..got a full confession from her about the lie, and that she killed her own children..(She is serving a life jail term as you read these words)

now you ask this...why did I remember this?...I was teaching at the time, and presented this to all classes (high school) on the idea of "the big lie"...Susan presented the "big lie" to the police, and it was immediately noted as such. But the police did not accuse her at that time....they waited..and waited...and then .....got her to confess..............................................................................................
........I drew on the board pictures of the street and how Susan couldn't have been stopped..The police knew all along it was a lie..They just waited for the best time to get her to confess...Why teach something like this????....try to send the message to the high school students that the "big lie" doesn't work with the police..they will catch you..and....the big lie doesn't always work in life..that was another message I was trying to teach...I don't know if that was wise..the big lie..sometimes works..but that is what I tried to teach in 1996..

Here is a paragraph from the lead article......."The tragic case attracted worldwide attention and stirred racial tension after Smith initially told police that a black man had carjacked her and kidnapped her children. She tearfully pleaded for the kids to be returned. But nine days later, she admitted she pushed her car down the access ramp of John D. Long Lake with the kids in the back. ...........
