21. Why are people so opposed to other languages?

In most countries (AFAIA), speaking two or more languages is considered as desirable and perfectly normal.

My daughter is bringing up her daughter to speak English as well as Dutch. (We live in The Netherlands). We speak to her in English (even though we all speak Dutch) and she replies in English. To other people, she speaks Dutch. If we lived in Belgium, we'd get her to speak French as well.

Maybe an American Native speaker should have a word in this guy's ear.
