FDR was an optimist who worked to unite the country and he opposed the populist demogogues that tried to divide our country through fear-mongering, pessimism, scapegoating, and appeals to class-warfare.

FDR opposed populists like Huey "Share the Wealth/Every Man A King" Long who preached simple solutions to complex problems and relied on demonizing the rich. FDR called Huey Long the 2nd most dangerous man in American politics (Douglass McArthur being number one).

FDR worked to liberalize trade and to undo the protectionist economic isolation of his populist opponents.

FDR believed in the ideals of economic liberalism and embraced reforms designed to save our economic system from populist attacks on both fronts.

For all these stands FDR was attacked as a plutocratic capitalist by the populist-nativists of his day.
