2. DACA is an executive order, not law

All it essentially did was order all federal authorities to not enforce immigration law against anyone who met the criteria, and established a way for those netting the criteria to get paperwork saying they meet the criteria.

By the letter of the law DACA recipients are still in the country illegally. The enforcement of that law has just been deferred for them to some later undetermined date. That's what the D stands for.

Trump lobbed that grenade for who knows what reason. From what I understand several Republican Attorneys General in various states were threatening to file a lawsuit against DACA, and that forced his hand. Because letting the status quo stand was easy for him. If they file a lawsuit then that puts him in a tighter position because he then must either admit they are wrong and revoke the EO or he has to have Jeff Sessions defend DACA in court. Having Sessions defend DACA in court would be political suicide with his base and those Attorneys General know it, so it made it easy to force the issues with him.
