24. I was about 70 miles away from Loma Prieta

I could tell it was a big one, from the rolling sort of ground movement. I just didn't know how far away until later. I remember riding my motorcycle up into the Berkeley Hills and watching the Marina District fire in SF, and seeing most of West Oakland in darkness, with occasional flashes of electrical shorts... someone brought up a little portable TV and I was amazed to see how the Nimitz had collapsed. That baseball game probably saved my life... otherwise there's a good chance I would have been on that structure at that time - it was my regular commute from Alameda...
