The planet is cooling - not the climate, but the formerly molten ball of whatever that was the earth after getting smacked by whatever made the moon. The core cools at about 100 degC per billion years (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inner_core#Dynamics), so the engine for the various mechanisms of volcanoes and plate movement will run down.
