Can anyone offer an opinion on PVC (Royal Products Celect) siding? REALLY need your help. . . [View all]

Hello helpful DU members!
Hubby and I need to reside our house and we have 2 options - redwood or Royal Products Celect siding. The cost difference is considerable - about $15,000 (the PVC costs less).

We currently have a cedar sided house but it needs to be stained and (long story) resided. My husband, 63, is still willing to go on a ladder to stain it and replace siding but I'm not willing to have him do it. We'd like something to be as maintenance free as possible although standard cleaning will be applied.

That said - anyone have any opinions - one way or another? The Royal Products is warrantied for 25 years against fading, chipping, etc. The builder that wants us to put up the redwood said "he's got a guy that can do it right and it won't have to be stained for 25 years." I know, if the business goes warranties mean nothing so it's a toss-up. In the case of the redwood, the guy putting it in is a perfectionist and not just a fly by night operation (almost 40 years in the business, taken over from his Father). Google searching doesn't help

Keep in mind this is NOT James Hardy (or similar) siding. One more thing - we're in the Chicagoland area but in a shaded (not shady) area that does get lots of snow drifts.

Really need (and appreciate) your help

Paula
