It hurts my ears, truly.

I hear him and also think, "what went wrong, and why isn't this getting fixed?"

He hears a question that he has no idea how to answer, so just puts together a string of platitudes. Anyone, even I, could say as much about Spain and Catalan. He's supposed to be more informed.
