Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-MN, is a GEM. [View all]

With her intellect and "relatability," no wonder she has been considered an up-and-comer.

But, at age 57, she is already a well-established Senator with two terms under her belt, and was just re-elected to a third term with 63% of the vote. And coming from Minnesota, she speaks to the concerns of voters across the midwest.

So we have quite a strong group of next-generation potential contenders for 2020: Sen. Amy Klobucher, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Corey Booker, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Reps. Adam Schiff and Julian and Joaquin Castro (Joaquin a current member of the House and Juan the former Secy. of HUD).

I'm sure there are others, too -- these are just some of the ones who came to mind.

So the 2 big issues remain: how to get our voters back on the rolls -- and armed with any newly required ID's -- and how to fight the Russian meddling.
