It's written by Eric Reid, who was Kaepernick's teammate in San Francisco. The decision to kneel was carefully thought out. They wanted to voice their concerns about police violence, but in a way that was as respectful as possible. If they really wanted to disrespect the flag or the anthem - which makes no sense to me as I fail to understand how you can "disrespect' an inanimate object - they could have just sat down.
