Smartphones can be hacked without needing any action on the part of the user. In a typical attack — one publicly revealed and patched this past year and thus open for discussion — a smartphone could be breached by sending a special txt message. Just having the phone number was all that was needed.

A library of these kinds of exploits specific to particular phones and computers was stolen from a hacked computer at an NSA contractor last summer.
