Congress should offer relief to postal service

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is preventing action on a relief measure for the U.S. Postal Service.

In 2006 Congress decided the post office was to pay into a fund for future retirement health benefits to the tune of several payments of $5.6 billion. The first one is due in September. Because of Congress’s inaction, the post office will be forced to default.

Even though some national Republican Congressmen would support action to reduce payments to $1 billion, the house leadership has refused to bring it up for a vote before the summer vacation, therefore forcing default. It makes me wonder if this is a way for Republicans to force privatization of the U.S. Postal Service to a large company like FedEx or someone similar. Goodbye cheap stamps.
