(11,767 posts)I am glad people are speaking out, but have to say...really? Trump was going to make healthcare cheaper, more accessible, and better for more Americans? In what fantasy land was he going to do this without using massive government power to bring the prices down, enforce higher standards of care, and grant people access?
There is NO MARKET SOLUTION to healthcare because healthcare is not a consumer good, it is a necessity of modern life. You can make it in many places without a car, without a smartphone, without a computer, etc... Those are products that have become very important but they are not necessities. Everyone needs healthcare at some point, and to make healthcare a commodity that operates on a profit motive is ridiculous.
Healthcare is a complicated service because people's incentives to use healthcare are not based on a rational process. We need it when we need it and often when we don't, we can't be bothered to think about it. Even when we need it sometimes we put it off until it becomes an emergency. We need to invest in more education about healthcare and make it truly affordable with universal access. We need to promote better nutrition, less stress, and more active lifestyles. It is going to take legislation and a cultural shift that is going to be a lot of heavy lifting that the free market has no incentive or desire to promote because there is no real gain for them.
Anyone who believed that Trump was going to deliver better, more affordable, and more accessible healthcare than what we have with the ACA, without going the single payer or universal coverage route is plain and simply ... stupid.
