2. The trees (still standing) should recover their foliage over the next few weeks.

The tree will use the internal reserves of glucose to bud out new leaves. I've seen right in my own yard with gypsy moths. It weakens the tree, but if it can get the leaves out long enough (which shouldn't be an issue in the tropics) it can replace the lost energy.
