Be nice and polite, I mean, but don't refer to any holidays when you're interacting with strangers. Not that that will necessarily get you left alone. As a store clerk in Texas, I had Christians complain that I didn't wish them Merry Christmas, when Christmas was weeks away yet.

I'd make one exception - if you KNOW you're talking to a War-on-Christmas fanatic, by all means say Happy Holidays. They enjoy feeling persecuted, so you'd be doing them a good deed.
