4. I have to agree with that general on this one.

It's not that the call is too unimportant for a president to bother with; it's that it's something that is better accomplished by someone from the military service. Even as it is done now, not everybody gets a phone call. How do they decide who gets one and who doesn't? It makes more sense to have a high-ranking member of the soldier's military branch speak with the family and offer personal condolences, and for the president to write a letter (and not robo-sign it. I recall Donald Rumsfeld got caught doing that and it did not go over well).
