Sometimes the most important thing is just being there. Be a sounding board. Be an attentive listener. Be supportive and compassionate.
Sometimes it's difficult not to reach for the trite platitudes and cliches -- although I always advise people to avoid "He/she is in a better place" -- but mostly I just let them know I care and hear them out.
