(8,217 posts)In the very very old tablets that mention the tale of Gilgamesh, which would have been stories passed through generations, it also involves a tale of a Flood, where Utnapishtm was an immortal who survived the deluge.
So it is believable that there have been crazy floods back then.
They believed in harlot like gods and so forth too.
However, noting that not all humans were proginated by said man, it is simple to assume that the flood is nowhere near as widespread as they think.
Heck, for a long while they thought that the Earth was flat and if their area got wiped, to them, it must mean that the whole world being affected.
Besides, if one actually figures out the size of the Ark, the Ark is small, smaller than many boats we have nowadays:

People can debate which one was the earlier story, I'd just say that stories are very limited in detail. Also, who could say that they are not two different people found in two different times.

Please note, that the Ark was not built by just Noah, but also by other people who were willing to help him for money or whatever else.
For all I know, it may have been part of the existing government that felt sorry for the guy and had the villagers help him out rather than suffer ridicule and disruptions.
