I'm assuming the splits are cheaper there (most are Japanese or Korean made). Also, they are still relatively new here. I've asked a few HVAC guys about them and got answers ranging from puzzled looks to 'yeah, we are starting to do those'
Hopefully the prices will come down more (they appear to have since I heard of these things).

80 overnight, 78 during the day - we are fine even when it's been 105 outside.

I just re-read your post and saw Japan. It's a no-brainer. Mini splits are big there.

My furnace is only 12 years old but the A/C compressor has to be 20 plus.

84 day/night lower to 79 when cooking or heavy work briefly then return 84 but we all sleep
