24. DWS failed by having a super lax IT/cyber security program that allowed the hacks

The hack wasn’t even sophisticated. It was a routine phishing hack the kind I see one or more a week in my inboxes.

But there were multiple levels of failure. First using Gmail for party business that opened them up to this kind of phishing. Second the incompetent It person at the DNC who told Panetta the phishing email was real and to click on the link- a double failure in both saying it was real and telling him to click the link in the email instead of changing his password by logging in and using the account settings instead of clicking the link.

And then to compound that when the FBI reaches out to the IT people at the DNC they ignored them and blew them off.

None of those failures were hard to prevent. Any competent IT department could have prevented the Panetta hack the way it happened.
