The thing that should not be ignored when thinking about motive is the fact regardless of why, it is easy and there is no outside mechanism that might divert impulsiveness. Even if you are correct that fame is the primary motivator, making it a little more difficult for them to make that dream come true could go a long way towards diverting the impulse for the actual act.
