It wasn't completely universal, of course.

But, back then the country valued thoughtfulness and intellect.

Somehow, as we have progressed past that high point, we have slid backward into the populism that celebrates stupidity.

8 years of the "guy you would want to have a beer with" followed by a turn to a guy very much like JFK, leading to blowback that gave us a stammering, jackass meglomaniac.
