I guess that is from where my confusion stems.

And I do understand where you are coming from, but I also believe that people should be given the amount of respect that they deserve. Trump has definitely triggered the 'The Emperor Has No Clothes' reaction from people, and there are times I am right there with them. Something to be proud of? Nah. Cathartic? You bet your life it is.
