That "gap" between urban and rural IS definitely the suburbs, including developments around rim towns that were created on previous farmland. I know I have watched the explosive development just outside of Philly - notably 2 counties west (Chester County and even into the Amish stronghold Lancaster County), where once pristine farmland became "Exburbia", with housing complex after housing complex after housing complex (Toll Brothers). In fact what prompted alot of this was the creation of large "office parks" in those suburbs where your commuter traffic ended up being suburb to suburb vs suburb to city.
