In reply to the discussion: Is 70 old? [View all]DFW
(60,416 posts)When I turned 21 in college, I had my official "Over-The-Hill" party, and decided that I was already officially "old," and anything after that was just gravy. Besides, that was 1973, and enough Americans were still coming home from Vietnam in body bags at age 19 and 20 to make us think that it was all relative. So, while I'm not 70 yet, it's looming on the horizon--IF I get there. Neither of my dad's parents did, so with my genes, from here on in, it's Beat The Reaper.
Old is what you think and feel--or maybe when you can no longer do either. I think worrying about it will get you there faster than anything else except maybe a lousy set of genes (got that covered) or a foolish diet (I try not to).
At the end of the day, I agree with Billy Joel's song "Vienna":
"But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old"
