So I think especially in Salt Lake any jury would acquit.
Well, if the jogger looks like a typical person from SLC at least.
That was a fear for a friend who had to fire in a mixture of self-defense/defense of another/stopping a violent felony in progress. She was a lesbian who had crossed the county line from her residence to the country to help a coworker leave a DV situation.
Her home county wouldn't have held her orientation against her, but was far less gun-friendly. The county that had jurisdiction unless she requested a change of venue was very gun friendly and certainly believed women should be allowed to defend themselves or have someone else defend them if they're getting dragged out of the window of a car by a person who has already beat the crap out of them multiple times on record. They might not say much if they saw a wife getting abused ("If she's letting it happen since she hasn't left, not my business" attitude), but they'd certainly support a woman trying to *leave* DV.
Even if the country jury didn't like lesbians, they certainly did believe any 5'1 woman should be able to shoot a guy much bigger than them if they feel in danger. And if nothing else the prosecution's weak argument that she could have just let him drag the wife out of the car so self defense didn't apply meant she could put the wife on the stand. *She* looked properly helpless, was able to show records of the multiple times the asshole had beaten her, and express gratitude and fear of what would have happened to her if her friend had abandoned her to that.
She was acquitted.
