has it's roots in racism. The religious right didn't start in the 80's with the abortion issue instead it started in the early 70s with Bob Jones university losing it's tax exempt status for it's segregationist policies. That was the original reason white evangelicals got active in politics. Should be noted Roe Vs Wade also happened in the early 70's too with a republican President. Yet White evangelicals did not make that an issue until 7 years later when a Democrat was President and they voted for the guy who legalized abortion when he was governor of California, but also opposed the civil rights act of 1964 go figure.
