When news reports began saying this latest incident was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history I was a little surprised. I did not have any other incident, but the number seemed small to be the worst in U.S. history. Later, I figured it was because 71 people had been shot. However, some news reports stated that it was the worst mass shooting since Virginia Tech.

In the case of your event it might not have been mentioned because it happened so long ago. It has been more than 100 years since that shooting. Reporters and anchors might not have wanted to go back so far into U.S. history.

Another problem might have been a lack of fact checking. One news report might might have said one thing and then just about everyone followed without checking to see if the statement was accurate.
